What Is National Purple Heart Day?
Observed each year on August 7, National Purple Heart Day recognizes recipients of the Purple Heart Medal, one of our nation’s oldest and most respected military decorations. The Purple Heart is awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces who have been wounded or killed in action while serving our country.
Its origins date back to 1782, when General George Washington created the Badge of Military Merit. In 1932, it was revived as the Purple Heart to honor those injured or killed in combat.

While Purple Heart Day specifically honors those wounded or killed in combat, it also reminds us to recognize all veterans who have worn the uniform with honor.
